Summary

While Machane Yehuda Market, called by locals the “shuk,” is the most bustling and colorful place in Jerusalem on a normal day, the Balabasta Festival amplifies everything already magnificent about the market: excellent food and crowd-worthy street performances. Every Monday in July, the market doubles as a carnival complete with eating contests, puppet shows, DJ booths, fruit giveaways, and carving workshops. Actors, poets, musicians, and dancers reclaim the space, transforming the best market in Israel into a wild party carnival. The creativity knows no bounds, as performers are infamous for surprising and interacting with their audiences. The party carries on late into the evening and restaurants, cafes and bars keep their doors open, serving equally as creative dishes.
