Summary

The city of Eilat, which shares its border with Jordan to the east and Egypt to the west, is the host to the International Belly Dancing Festival held annually in January. Given its geographic location, Eilat constitutes an ideal setting for the event which embraces and celebrates the style of traditional Middle Eastern dance. The festival is one of the largest of its kind in the world, and each year professional dancers, belly dance teachers and amateurs from different countries around the world visit Israel to perform, teach, and dance away the warm winter at the southern tip of the Negev Desert along the Red Sea shore. The festival is a three-day show hosted by a partnership of hotels in the port city, and it features performances, workshops and lectures centered on the lively form of dance. The dances also highlight other types of Middle Eastern dance, ranging from classical Egyptian style belly dance to Turkish Sufi.
