Summary

Summer is the season in Israel when everyone escapes the heat of Tel Aviv and central Israel during the hot and sticky nights, and instead travels to Jerusalem in order to get a taste of the refreshingly cool evening breeze of the holy city. Summer is also the season of cultural events in Jerusalem, and the recent Season of Culture initiative helps to draw in these crowds by offering a wonderful selection of artistic events from June through the beginning of September, ranging from dance, music, poetry, philosophy, visual art, new media and more. The festival presents eight or nine main events, some of which are permanent annual events like the Balabasta Festival and the Sacred Music Festival, in addition to other smaller productions. As the festival’s artistic director Itay Mautner explained, “Our curatorial directive is to explore what happens when excellent cultural content encounters Jerusalem, the most fascinating city in the world. This meeting point is highly charged, singular, and can lead to countless artistic discoveries.” The festival is a celebration of the unique fusion of energies produced by the locals in Jerusalem, as well as the timeless artistic and spiritual inspiration which the city provides to both its visitors and residents.
