Summary

The presence of the Jews in this area is still recorded in the names of the places (Stairwell of the Jews, Jews Street). Here was raised the first building strictly build to serve as a synagogue. To prove its existence, there is a stone with a Hebrew inscription, kept at the Archaeological Museum in Lisbon. This stone was first found in the Monchique Convent and it is thought that the Convent has been built in the exact place of the old synagogue. In the Monchique Jewish Quarter there was also a Jewish cemetery, in the upper part of the hill.
